2020 STFM Humanism Award
This award honors Johanna Shapiro, PhD as a champion of integrating medical humanities into medical education to prompt deep reflection, to improve the patient’s experience, and to enhance health professionals’ well-being. A rigorous and prolific scholar with more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, you have researched topics including cross-cultural communication, caring for patients with disabilities, physicians’ identities, empathy and compassion. Through her scholarship, she has mentored hundreds of trainees, providing feedback and guidance to support their development and cultivate their scholarly skills.
